Improve Sperm Quality With Vitamin Supplements

Healthy sperm are a key component of fertility. Supplements can help.

Healthy, vital sperm is an important component to conceiving a baby, regardless of fertility struggles. Luckily, sperm quality responds well to easy lifestyle changes such as taking specific supplements. With consistent use of vitamins and supplements, many men can see significant improvement in both the total sperm count, as well the morphology (how the sperm look) and motility (how well they "swim") within 3 months.

The following supplements are frequently recommended to men while they and their partner's are trying to conceive.

  • Vitamin C: Supplementation of this vitamin can increase both sperm count and sperm motility, and may decrease the risk of sperm damage. It is particularly important for people who do not eat ample amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • Omega 3 Fatty Acid/Fish Oil: Research continued show that fish oil can significantly reduce oxidative damage to sperm and boost sperm count and overall health.

  • Zinc: Zinc needed to make the outer layer and tail of the sperm and therefore is essential for healthy sperm. Deficiency can cause impotence and infertility. Zinc is also lost with each ejaculation, so an active sex life and a low zinc diet will put men at risk.

  • Vitamin E: Deficiency of this vitamin can cause damage to the reproductive tissues. Recent research showed a significant increase in both sperm motility and count with supplementation vitamin E. It is important to take a supplement of vitamin E in pill form because it is difficult to get large enough amounts from dietary sources alone.
