Acupressure for Period Pain: The "Four Gates"

Acupressure can be a helpful method for relieving period pain.

Acupressure is a non-invasive technique similar to acupuncture that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to relieve pain and promote health.

These key points, known as “The Four Gates”, are particularly helpful to relieve period pain:

  • Hegu (LI4): Located on the back of the hand between the thumb and index finger. This point can help relieve pain and is known for its general pain-relieving properties.

  • Taichong (LV3): Located on the top of the foot, in the webbing between the big toe and the second toe. This point is helpful for relieving pain, stress, and promoting the free flow of energy in the body.

Acupressure is generally safe, but if you have any underlying health conditions or are pregnant, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any acupressure regimen.

How to Apply Acupressure

  1. Locate the Point: Use your fingers to find the specific point. Refer to the descriptions above to help you locate each point accurately.

  2. Apply Pressure: Use your thumb, finger, or a blunt object to apply firm pressure to the point. You should feel a comfortable pressure, but it should not be painful.

  3. Hold and Massage: Hold the pressure for about 1-3 minutes while breathing deeply. You can also gently massage the point in a circular motion.

  4. Repeat as Needed: You can apply acupressure several times a day or as needed for pain relief.

Tips for Effectiveness

  • Relax and Breathe: Ensure you are relaxed and breathing deeply while applying pressure.

  • Consistency: Regular application can lead to better results over time.

  • Combine with Other Techniques: Acupressure can be used alongside other pain relief methods, such as heat therapy, exercise, and proper hydration.
